Why Choose Alicante?
Alicante offers a laid-back Mediterranean lifestyle with a blend of historic charm and modern amenities. Popular among Europeans as a second residence—especially in winter—the city is now drawing attention from US buyers seeking affordability, accessibility, and long-term value.
The city enjoys a desirable climate with year-round sunshine
Strong rental demand is fueled by students, seasonal residents, and tourists
Excellent infrastructure includes an international airport and the University of Alicante
Travel between Spain and the US is easy, with 10–12 hours flight time and seasonal direct flights from major hubs
Whether you're looking to buy a home in Spain for retirement, a second residence, or passive income, Alicante offers a compelling mix of lifestyle and investment potential.
Property Types & Price Points
Alicante features a range of properties to suit different goals and budgets. Modern city apartments typically start around €180,000 (or $170,000–$270,000 for a 2-bedroom), while luxury beachfront villas begin at approximately €600,000. Traditional homes with character are also available, though some may require renovations. Whether you're seeking a beach house or an investment property, Inside Job Real Estate Concierge helps you identify high-potential listings and avoid costly mistakes.
Why are Californians looking at Alicante?
Start with a number. California's median home price hit a record $930,260 in May 2026. In Alicante, average asking prices sit around €2,700 per square meter — so a 90-square-meter apartment (about 970 sq ft) runs roughly €243,000, or $277,000 at today's exchange rate. That's three Alicante apartments for the price of one median California house.
And the trade-off isn't the weather. Alicante gets about 2,900 hours of sunshine a year to San Diego's 3,100, with 12 inches of rain to San Diego's 9. It's the same climate, minus the mortgage. One honest caveat — July and August run hotter and stickier than coastal SoCal. Buy the air conditioning.
Do Americans pay a premium in Alicante?
This is the quieter reason we like Alicante for California buyers. Americans pay the highest price per square meter of any foreign nationality in Spain — €3,390/m² in late 2024, roughly 30% more than British buyers — because they cluster in Madrid, Barcelona, and the Costa del Sol, where sellers have learned exactly what an American budget looks like. Alicante is a different market. Foreigners bought 45.7% of all homes in the province in late 2025, but those buyers are British, Dutch, French, and German — and prices are set for European budgets. In Alicante you're not bidding against other Americans. The market simply hasn't priced you in yet.
That won't last forever. Alicante prices rose about 13% in the past year and are at record highs — cheap relative to California is not the same as cheap relative to last year. This is why we tell clients to arrive with a strategy, not a Zillow habit; here's how a buyer's agent works in Spain and why the seller's agent isn't on your side.
How do you actually get here from LAX?
Honestly: there's no nonstop flight from the US to Alicante. The clean route is Iberia's daily nonstop from LAX to Madrid — about 11 hours — then either a one-hour connecting flight or a 2.5-hour high-speed train to Alicante. Plan on 15 to 16 hours door to door. That's a real cost, and we won't pretend otherwise.
The timezone, though, works better than most Californians expect. Alicante runs 9 hours ahead of California year-round. For remote workers that means 8 a.m. in LA is 5 p.m. here — you keep your California meetings in the Alicante evening and own the entire Mediterranean day. We run Inside Job on exactly this split, between Los Angeles and Alicante.
Where in Alicante should Californians look?
Per idealista data (June 2025 asking prices):
Playa de San Juan — €3,925/m². A wide, sandy urban beach with modern buildings behind it; the closest thing Spain offers to a Southern California beach town.
Historic center — €3,264/m². Renovated period buildings and walkable everything. Note: Alicante has frozen new tourist-rental licenses through January 2027, so buy here to live, not to Airbnb.
Cabo de las Huertas — €3,209/m². Villas, rocky coves, quiet. The La Jolla of the lineup.
Ensanche-Diputación — €3,097/m². Central, near the marina, and the best value-to-location blend in the city.
La Albufereta — €3,086/m². A calm residential bay between the center and San Juan.
Alicante even has a neighborhood named Los Ángeles. Apartments there run about €1,500 per square meter — the resemblance to LA prices ends at the name.
